The Valencia Grand Prix, scheduled for the 15th, 16th and 17th November, has been cancelled due to the devastating DIHL that has severely affected the region. This decision is taken in consideration of the tragedy and the tragic consequences suffered by the local community. Although the event could have been feasible from a logistical point of view at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, the general conditions in Valencia do not allow for public events of this magnitude. The organisers of the World Motorcycling Championship, together with the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, have expressed their deep shock at the situation and have conveyed their support to the victims and their families at this difficult time.
Damage at the Ricardo Tormo circuit
The DANA of 29 October left serious damage to the Ricardo Tormo Circuit and its facilities. More than 200 litres of rain per square metre in a few hours caused the Sechera and El Poyo ravines to overflow, dragging water, mud and debris. This seriously affected the accesses, car parks and several key infrastructures, which now require urgent repairs. Although the track itself is in good condition, the circuit has initiated a detailed analysis of the damage to its facilities.
Around 100 people, including operators and logistics staff, were forced to spend the night in safe areas within the circuit. General Manager Nicolás Collado confirmed that everyone was safe and explained that this assessment process will be key to understanding the impact of the DIHL on the organisation of future events.
Possibility of celebration in Catalonia
With the cancellation of the Grand Prix in Valencia, Dorna Sports has been working against the clock to find a viable alternative for the final round of the championship. Carlos Ezpeleta, sporting director of the championship, has confirmed that the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló is the most likely venue to replace the cancelled event. The race would be held on the same weekend, 15-17 November, making it easier for teams and fans to attend. Ezpeleta emphasised the importance of keeping the last race of the year, not only for the sporting calendar, but also to honour the fans and the paddock.
Dorna has applied to the Government of Catalonia for the necessary authorisation to hold the event at its circuit, lining up with authorities from both the Spanish and Valencian governments to coordinate the details. This confirmation is expected to come within the next 48 hours, which would allow the organisers to start working on the logistics of the event, which must be organised in record time.
