FC Barcelona have achieved a resounding victory by beating Real Madrid 5-2 in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, played on 12 January 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The win marks Barça’s 15th title in the competition, cementing their position as the most successful club in Super Cup history. Despite a promising start for Madrid with a goal from Kylian Mbappé, Barça reacted quickly, displaying impressive attacking play reminiscent of the great tridents of the past. Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were the protagonists, scoring goals that led the team to a crushing victory.

The match started with a goal from Mbappé after five minutes, which generated optimism among Madrid fans. However, Barcelona responded strongly. Lamine Yamal equalised in the 22nd minute and Lewandowski converted a penalty shortly after. Raphinha and Alejandro Balde joined the goalscoring party before the break, leaving Madrid in a difficult situation. In the second half, Raphinha scored again, consolidating Barça’s lead. Although Rodrygo pulled one back for Madrid after Szczęsny’s dismissal, Barcelona maintained their dominance and secured the title.

Barça's winning strategy

FC Barcelona’s victory in the Spanish Super Cup was not only due to the individual quality of their players, but also to a well-defined tactical strategy by Hansi Flick. From the start of the match, Barça showed an attacking disposition that surprised Real Madrid, taking advantage of the speed and creativity of their attacking trident of Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha. One of the keys to success was the high pressing exerted by the blaugranas, which made it difficult for Madrid to get the ball out of the box. This constant pressure forced errors in the Madrid defence, allowing Barça to regain possession quickly and create goal-scoring opportunities. In addition, the use of full-backs, such as Alejandro Balde and Jules Koundé, was fundamental in opening up spaces in the opposition defence, which made it easier to get into the box.

Raphinha MVP and key figure of the match

Raphinha not only contributed two goals, but was also named MVP of the match. His performance was fundamental to the team’s success and his ability to create chances was highlighted by the coaching staff. With a two goals and an assist, Raphinha became the engine of the Culé attack, showing his ability to run the ball and finish plays effectively. After the match, he emphasised the importance of teamwork, noting that ‘what matters are collective titles’, reflecting his commitment to the group over individual achievements. This title can serve as a boost for the rest of the season, giving the team confidence after a period of trophy drought.

In addition, Jules Koundé’s pass for Barça’s third goal, scored by Raphinha in the 39th minute, was recognised as the best assist of the final. Koundé showed his skill by delivering a precise cross that allowed Raphinha to score with an effective header.
