The 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, held at the historic Suzuka Circuit, saw another spectacular performance from Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian Mercedes driver secured victory following a highly strategic race and became the new leader of the Formula 1 World Championship.

Antonelli started from pole position, although he had a difficult start and dropped several places in the opening corners. However, the Italian driver kept his cool and made up ground thanks to the strong pace of his Mercedes and a perfect team strategy. As the laps went by, he steadily climbed the order to put himself back in contention for victory.

A key moment came with the deployment of the Safety Car, which allowed Antonelli to make a strategic pit stop and move into first place. From there, the Italian controlled the race until crossing the finish line as the winner and securing his second consecutive victory of the season.

Piastri and Leclerc complete the podium at Suzuka

The battle for the podium was also intense for much of the race. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri put in a superb performance and managed to finish in second place after remaining competitive throughout the Grand Prix. The Australian led during the early stages of the race and showed that the British team can compete at the front of the field.

Third place went to Charles Leclerc, who returned to the podium with Ferrari following a solid race at Suzuka. The Monegasque driver had to defend his position in the final laps against George Russell’s Mercedes, which pressed hard until the end but failed to overtake him.

With this result, Ferrari maintains its place among the championship’s most competitive teams, whilst McLaren secures an important result following a difficult start to the season.

Bearman's crash and a difficult race for several drivers

The race was also marked by a moment of great tension following a heavy crash involving British driver Oliver Bearman. The young driver lost control of his car on one of the circuit’s fast corners and crashed into the barriers, forcing the safety car onto the track and completely changing the race strategy.

Fortunately, Bearman was able to get out of the car unaided and did not suffer any serious injuries, although the crash caused concern in the paddock. This incident was one of the decisive moments of the Grand Prix, as it shook up the order on the track and allowed several drivers to make their pit stops at the right time. The Japanese Grand Prix thus ended with excitement right up to the final laps and confirmed Antonelli’s fine form; at just 19 years of age, he is establishing himself as one of the major revelations of the 2026 season.
